What AI in UK Tech SMEs Investigates
AI in UK Tech follows the practical business questions emerging as artificial intelligence moves into everyday software engineering and company operations. Across individual Intelligence Cycles, Prime Economist will examine the relationship between AI tools, productivity, recruitment, technical skills and the costs of implementation. Each cycle focuses on a defined decision facing UK technology businesses, brings together available evidence and industry perspectives, and makes clear where the answers remain uncertain. Our first cycle investigates the economics of junior software developer hiring alongside AI-assisted development. Future cycles will be announced as their research scope is agreed.

A message from the Founder
Tal Kharin · Founder, Prime Economist
AI is already changing how UK tech companies hire, build and compete. This series is about understanding the real economics behind that shift — beyond the hype, and into the decisions founders actually face.
Prime Economist introduces AI in UK Tech, its first Industry Intelligence series examining how artificial intelligence is changing software development, recruitment and business operations across the UK technology sector. With over 15 years of experience in IT, I have witnessed first-hand how AI coding tools, AI agents and AI automation are reshaping software engineering, developer productivity and the way technology companies operate.
These developments raise critical questions: Will AI replace software developers? How is AI changing recruitment and workforce development? Can AI for business improve productivity, reduce costs and deliver measurable returns on investment?
Through successive research cycles, we will explore these challenges using valuable research, market data, economic analysis and expert perspectives. Rather than producing another general AI report, our ambition is to examine the real economic impact of AI adoption and its implications for technology businesses. Our goal is to provide founders, co-founders and decision-makers across UK small and medium-sized technology enterprises with reliable, evidence-based intelligence to support informed decisions on hiring, AI investment and implementation.
