If AI Makes Coding Faster, Why Is Hiring Becoming More Complicated?

Developer in modern office

Today, software engineers promise faster development times by continuously using large language models. Does it affect development speed? Yes, it does. Productivity, well, that's where research must be applied. Yet British technology employers struggle with recruitment, while developers face an increasingly competitive job market.
What can clarify this apparent contradiction?

Why is it so hard to get hired in 2026?

Claude, GitHub Copilot, and ChatGPT change how software is developed. Coding assistants generate functions, suggest solutions and automate repetitive tasks. These capabilities raise expectations about productivity, but faster code generation does not necessarily mean faster software delivery. In a controlled experiment in 2025 involving according the  METR article, experienced open-source developers, participants take 19% longer to complete tasks when AI tools are available. The study examines a specific development environment using early-2025 tools, rather than the entire software industry.

Meanwhile, the British labour market presents a different challenge.

The UK government report A Snapshot of Entry-Level Hiring in the UK reveals a substantial decline in recruitment for entry-level software engineering positions. As of April 2026, hiring for entry-level Software Engineers falls by 27% year-on-year, compared with a 19% decline across entry-level Engineering roles and a 10% decline among senior Engineering professionals. The nine-percentage-point gap between entry-level and senior Engineering hiring emerges in early 2026, suggesting growing pressure on junior recruitment. The report identifies software engineering as one of the occupations experiencing the steepest entry-level hiring declines, while the profession does not rank among the weakest performers when all seniority levels are combined.

Although these patterns coincide with expanding AI capabilities in software development, the research finds no conclusive evidence that AI directly causes the decline. It also identifies employer selectivity, skills mismatches and broader labour market conditions as contributing factors.

The figures suggest that technological productivity and employment demand do not necessarily move together.

Is Recruitment Struggling in the UK Currently?

The UK job market faces an unusual problem: employers struggle to find suitable candidates while qualified professionals struggle to find work. The ManpowerGroup UK Talent Shortage Survey 2026 confirms that recruitment difficulties persist, particularly where employers require specific technical skills and experience. The reasons extend beyond a shortage of applicants. Economic uncertainty, rising employment costs and changing skill requirements make employers more selective. AI adds further uncertainty about which roles and capabilities businesses actually need. UK recruitment is struggling, but there is no single established cause. The evidence points to a combination of economic pressure and a mismatch between available skills and employer expectations.

How Is AI Changing Software Developer Hiring in the UK?

AI allows software companies to increase productivity without necessarily expanding their engineering teams. However, faster coding does not eliminate the need for testing, maintenance and quality control. Employers must determine whether AI improves overall efficiency or simply shifts costs to other stages of development.

This changes hiring decisions. Companies increasingly evaluate whether new developers bring skills and expertise that existing teams and AI tools cannot provide. The focus shifts from expanding headcount to identifying the capabilities that support business growth.

The Office for National Statistics' October 2026 labour market report shows that UK vacancies remain under pressure, with rising employment costs influencing recruitment decisions among smaller businesses. AI adds another consideration, but economic uncertainty and business demand continue to shape whether companies hire.

Are Employers Replacing Developers With AI?

Evidence from British employers does not currently support a straightforward replacement narrative. The ManpowerGroup UK Talent Shortage Survey 2026 reports that only 10% of surveyed employers use AI and automation to replace headcount.

The same research identifies AI-related skills as the most difficult skill category to recruit, mentioned by 19% of employers. These findings concern employers across industries rather than software engineering alone. Nevertheless, they reveal an important distinction: adopting AI and reducing employment are separate business decisions.

AI may change the responsibilities attached to technical roles before it changes the number of positions available.

What Does This Mean for the UK Technology Workforce?

The relationship between AI productivity and recruitment remains uncertain.

Companies face pressure to control employment costs while adapting to new technologies. Candidates encounter changing expectations, even when their existing technical qualifications remain relevant.

The resulting difficulty is not necessarily a shortage of developers. It may reflect a mismatch between business requirements, available experience and the financial justification for expanding teams.

Current UK evidence does not establish AI as the primary cause of the hiring slowdown. Economic uncertainty and labour costs provide competing explanations, while technological adoption changes the skills employers expect.

The question is whether higher software productivity ultimately creates sufficient new demand to support employment growth, or encourages businesses to operate with smaller engineering teams.

This tension forms part of Prime Economist's ongoing research into the economics of AI, software productivity and employment in UK technology businesses. Explore the AI vs Junior Developers Intelligence Cycle.
